Social innovations which apply to me

Our social innovation ideas are here on our Facebook page. We are waiting for yours!

With this project on social innovation I started to realize existing social innovations around. It is clear that the innovator was a person who was not afraid of looking for new solutions. Personally, I most like initiatives based on connecting people of all ages, backgrounds and needs who are willing to share valuable stuff they already don't need or their skills, knowledge and good will. I admire if someone can give it a shape and it works. Below, there are a few examples - using them will be money wise, enriching, ecological, adventurous and will give you an opportunity to learn some useful stuff. They respect principles such as reliability, trust, authenticity, being friendly to the environment and the joy of learning. I used most of them and can warmly recommend the same to you.
CouchSurfing - stay with locals free of charge

Airbnb - local accommodation around the world – money wise and enjoyable

NAUČMESE - sharing skills and knowledge

Bla Bla Car - cheap travelling and new contacts, environmental friendly

Similarly as others at the beginning, I first needed to work out how to realize my social innovation idea. I have chosen crowdfunding as apart from earning the initial money, I needed to present my idea to a lot of people. I got a video animation done and posted it on HitHit - a post is there for 40 days and during that time it has to raise all money. Hard work – I did not know I had to be a successful online marketing specialist! It is a must to take care of your contribution as if it was a product in a shop – promote it, support it by accompanying events, call to action your friends and their friends and their friends. In short, those 40 days will keep you super-busy, mate. I didn´t make it then but at least I know how to do it better next time. It may be useful to watch the seminar on how to be successful on a crowdfunding platform before opening your project.

Nowadays, ideas of young people are often supported by big companies as they are seen as prospective customers. That is why their corporate social responsibility programmes focusing on young people are a powerful marketing tool.
For example SMART UP or Vpohybu run in the Czech republic. Both provide educational and networking support. Entering them will give you an opportunity to learn a format called project – if you can transfer your idea into a project, you will have a chance to raise money via various community fundations and public bodies, local or international. An example of a local one is NadaceVeronica (Brno, Czech republic). On the other side of the spectrum it is the European Social Fund – you may be surprised to see how many buildings and services in your community have been funded by that source, which is called a grant, reaching amounts of millions Czech crowns.

Having a heart of an entrepreneur? For innovators with business minds, there are programmes of support such as Nastartujte se of the Commercial Bank which has funded start ups such as Skinners (socks-shoes) or an instrument of accident prevention DataFromSky. A young entrepreneur, most probably a university student, would use a business incubator for developing his/her idea and a co-working centre such as ImpactHub in Brno to meet inspiring people and find contacts. An interview with the founder of the Impact Hub is here (only in Czech).

On a much smaller scale of a secondary school teenager, you may get a support at your school or local municipality – it will need a skill to communicate how the community will benefit from your idea if it is realized. It is also very important to know that a big thing takes time to mature – months, even years. Will you be able to keep going and not to give up? Keep visiting us – we will publish interviews with people who did not give the process up and now they represent a successful social innovator.

Obdivuji, když tomu dá někdo konkrétní podobu a funguje to.

NAUČMESE - sdílení dovedností a znalostí

Bla Bla Car - levné cestování a nové kontakty

Explaining what social innovation means to us through animation

You can check our animations on our Vimeo or Facebook page

During the animation workshop with Kinoskola we were divided into two groups and everybody in the group decided what they were going to film. The topic was social innovation. Basically we had to make a video, that would explain what social innovation means to us. So we ended up with two beautiful animations which are on our Vimeo account and Facebook page.

What I love about art is that most of the time you don’t know what the author meant to say by making it. Everybody who observes the piece has different associations with colours and objects, everybody uses their imagination and it makes them think about things they wouldn’t expect, and come up with ideas they wouldn't come to their minds without being inspired by art. This, in my opinion, applies more to modern art which is more abstract. That’s great, right? Because the author doesn’t just create something beautiful, she/he makes the people THINK and produce something of their own - an IDEA.

Graffiti is a modern form of art. Not acknowledged by everybody yet, though! Since it’s on the streets it’s the best way to get art to the public - it’s always out there. One of the most known graffiti artist is probably Banksy. He is an England based artist, political activist and nobody knows who he really is. Graffiti is against the law in many countries, so he uses a nickname to sign his works. I wouldn’t like to speak for him and write what I think he wanted to say with his work. I rather want to show some of it, that speaks for itself.

When our workshop groups faced the task of making an animation or a short video explaining what social innovation means to them, one of them decided the best way to show it was in the means of graffiti. Graffiti is a young form of art and even though not everybody is in love with it, it helps to express a message. So our group got right to it and made this awesome video! What do you think these young animation amateurs wanted to say? As the authors, we would like to drag your attention to the principle we wanted to share with you through this video: when everybody comes and adds something of their own - that’s how a great idea evolves! That’s exactly what Social Innovation is to us - modern, outgoing and solving a problem. But to solve a problem you have to put your minds together!

What was your first idea, when you saw our video? Maybe just like graffiti and other forms of art it made you think about something else? Maybe you came up with a social innovation already? We are waiting for you input!

Každý, kdo dílo pozoruje, má jiné asociace spojené s barvami a objekty a každý v nich vidí něco jiného.

Explaining what social innovation means to us through animation

You can check our animations on our Vimeo or Facebook page

Love story or why to start talking about social innovation with young people

Do you live a life of a reactionist or the one of a pro activist? When you are 15+ you probably go to school where you get prescribed tasks. You are probably made to believe that a group of unknown specialists designed the best selection of knowledge for you and some other groups made series of tests to test you if you did your homework. You are supposed to live in that mode for some more years further. You are trained to react to what others bring to you. Nevertheless, will you be able to switch, when it´s the right time, to a mode of a self confident member of a society, a successful enterpreneur, a smart NGO worker or a skillful engineer? Will you be able to improve the life of many others, save the planet or at least not to consumme in a way causing vast destruction? These were the questions which authors of the project Empowering Youth to Become Social Innovators asked a year ago. And it seemed obvious that it would be important to make young people believe that their ideas matter. The sooner, the better.

We all probably understand what an innovation is. You just materialise a good idea and abraka dabra - an innovation is born. The aspect of „social“ means that there are a lot of other people who can benefit from that innovation and they just start using it in their everyday life. Petr Vitek, a co-founder of the Czech Impact Hub, a global network supporting young entrepreneurship, in an interview for a student magazine makes a point when mentioning an old Indian rule: all decisions had to be made with regard to the seven following generations.  We might not need to design social innovations if we respected such a rule!

All right then – we discovered what social innovation means for us, talked to inspiring people, shared our motivations to innovate, looked around to find existing social innovations in practice and improved in a number of useful skills. When it comes down to making things happen, there are still these major questions: How to approach social innovation? From which perspective? Where to start?

This is the moment when art steps in: when making your hands create scenes, let´ s say from clay, or trying express ideas through pictures, new connections come to your mind, ideas make sense and eventually you get it. Like with our Love story: a simple story of an old person being helped by a young lady. Yes, we made it! Our first team animation and it worked! Fantastic. However, how does it connect with social innovation, if ever? We invite you to watch the animation and find the answer for yourself, no matter what we have written there, at the end, for you. This is our connection but you may like it differently. Welcome to our own discovery.

- Anna
